Locomotive a vapore Gr 685 e Gr 683
Versione 1.0 del 25/02/03
----------------------------------------------

The steam engines Gr. 685 were the most representative in the Italian Railway,
in fact they were called with the nickname the <<Queens>>.
They were built in five series during the years between 1912 and 1928 and reached the number of 271 units
(at the beginning).
Used especially for the speedy passengers' trains, they travelled on the railways nearly all around Italy.
Amond the most prestigious services, we remember the <<Simplon Orient Express>>.

Max speed: 120 km/h
Power: 1400 CV a 75 km/h
Boiler pressure: 12 kg/cm
Adhesion mass: 70.8 t (I e II series) 72.1 t (II-V series)
Mass in running order: 45.0 t (I e II series) 46.8 t (II-V series)

685.955-984 (V series caprotti distr.).

The steam engines Gr. 683 were made out from the transformation of five steam engines Gr. 685
modifying boiler and trasmission system (with superheated steam) between the years 1940 and 1941.
After this transformation, the power went up to 1400 HP, the biggest one among the italians <<Plaire>>.
At first, they were completely covered with an aerodynamic fairing that covered the part of the tyres
and the tender and were removed in the years 1946-48.
