How to install:

Installation of this locomotive requires that the original Microsoft Scotsman engine files as included in Microsoft Train Simulator are installed on your system.

Create a folder named 'gs14' in the Train Simulator/Trains/Trainset folder. Unzip the contents of this archive into this new folder. Place the CON file 'gs14light' in the folder Train Simulator/Trains/Consists. The model is now ready to run.

The Original:

This is a Microsoft Train Simulator model of the Gooische Stoomtram locomotive no. 14, built in 1913 by Henschel & Sohn in Cassel with Manufacturers no. 12190.

The Gooische Stroomtram was a standard gauge tramway system that linked Amsterdam with the region to the East called 'Het Gooi'. The company ran trams from 1881 until 1949 when the tracks were lifted and bus services took over. The tram played an important role in the development of the region, but was not loved by everyone: its nickname was 'De Gooische Moordenaar', i.e. the 'Murderer from Het Gooi'; it got blamed for each and every accident, even if it wasn't at fault.

Over the years, the Gooische Stoomtram used a total of 28 steam tram engines. 26 of these were built by Henschel between 1881 and 1921 to a basically similar design, although they became more powerful over time as their weight went up from 9.75 to 17 tons in the final models.

Locomotive no. 14 saw continuous service until 1930 when diesel railcars were introduced and the steam engines were relegated to second-line service. It was scrapped in 1935.

A very similar machine, no. 18 (built in 1921) has been preserved and is operational with the Dutch Steam Preservation Society 'Museumstoomtram Hoorn-Medemblik' (http://www.museumstoomtram.nl/eng/).

The Model:

The model was built and textured in 2002 by Jur Snijder using Abacus Train Sim Modeler, based on reference drawings and photographs. Version 1.0 relies on sound and cab files from the standard MS Scotsman. In accordance with the prototype the loco has no whistle, but the steam bell can be operated by pressing the space bar.

The model contains approx. 4000 polygons. It is finished in the later dark green colour. A version in the earlier two tones of brown will also be released.

The couplers have been adapted to allow the use of bogie carriages on the very sharp tram curves provided by the Xtracks add-on track package. In this case the bogie coaches will need similar coupling specifications in their .wag files.

Acknowledgements:

This is my first Train Simulator model. I am very grateful for the help I received from many people over the Internet, especially from those in the UKTrainSim Forums. Without them I would not have been able to complete this. However, any remaining faults in the model are entirely caused by my own limitations.
